“Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.” -Chinese proverb.
Education is the opportunity to inspire. It is the key to inquiry, experience, and knowledge. In order to critically think and analyze, make large connections, become global citizens, and solve world problems students must be part of a supportive classroom that challenges and stimulates.
Teachers must differentiate for multiple intelligences and modify instruction when creating a classroom atmosphere in which every student can reach his or her full potential. All children from all backgrounds must feel comfortable, no matter which way they prefer to learn. The individual interests and learning styles of each child are taken into account. Students then learn from each other and not just from the teacher, increasing engagement and competence. The teacher acts merely as a guide to help students get started on a quest of learning and discovery.

When students are more involved and active in their learning, they are much more likely to be successful in the class and to truly enjoy the content. Students form personal connections to the social sciences and primary resources via multiple platforms: Socratic seminars, document based questions, debate, and authentic assessment. Guest speakers and field trips make those personal connections grow deeper and foster more passion for learning. Students then gain empathy and become contributors to the global society. They start to see that we all have the ability to make the world a better place. Students that participate in inquiry-based education create lasting memories, fueling the intrinsic motivation to keep learning well past their secondary education.
Teaching abroad makes me a strong educator. Through life in Korea, my travels around the globe, and many rich experiences back in the States, I am able to bring in knowledge of various cultures, philosophies, and geographical and historical material into my units. Students become eager learners once they have seen the endless possibilities of the world that awaits them. I jump at every opportunity available for getting my students outside of the textbook and classroom walls and into experiencing the world first-hand. Our modern world constantly evolves. My students take part in this global connectivity through new technology and resources. Whether they are researching and analyzing current events and breaking news, or producing and editing high quality broadcasts, they are taking part in the fast-paced 21st century.

I combine other subject areas and disciplines into my courses. I collaborate with other teachers; they give me new ideas and students are able to make connections between the social sciences and what they are learning in their other classes. By teaming up with other teachers, I bring more art, literature, research, technology, and music into the units I create.
Just as I set high expectations for my students, I make my education a top priority. I constantly research pedagogy, best practices, and social science content knowledge. The more I learn, the more I want to keep learning. Education is a life-long journey and I share this enthusiasm with my colleagues and students.
