HW Due Thursday, September 19th:
  • Jet Stream Segment Finalized Draft - file given to teacher before class starts
  • Complete the individual Jet Stream assessment if your segment has been finalized and turned in already

In Class Tuesday, September 17th - Broadcast Journalism:
  • Students will now be working at different paces and rhythms depending on finishing last segment, beginning new segment, hosting the Jet Stream, working on a shortie, a sports story, etc.
  • Students that still need to turn in first segments of the year will follow this protocol: 
    • Complete Editing Checklist
    • Final Draft shown to teacher, Finalized Draft Checklist filled out
    • Students make final corrections & finalize segments​
    • Finalized segments placed on class hard drive
    • Students complete individual Jet Stream assessment
  • Students that are beginning new segments will follow this protocol:
    • View example videos of investigative journalism, PSA, and a game show for creative inspiration
    • Our segment ideas should include at least one school topic, one off-campus topic, news, features, elementary, middle, or high schoolers, could be promotions, PSAs, games, investigations, etc.
    • Individually write down 3-5 segment ideas
    • Combine our ideas with other students with similar ideas and make groups
    • If group gets idea approved, can move forward with planning and writing your pitch sheet.
    • Begin emailing teachers, admin, and students to schedule interviews. BCC Mr. Lipsky on the emails.
    • Interviews, filming locations, and B-roll must be planned in advance. Teachers and students will not allow last minute appointments. You must prearrange all of this ahead of time, through email, face to face, text, etc, and stay organized on these appointments. Choose your favorite method, email, calendar, text, etc, and make appointments and ask permission.
    • Must keep in mind previous Jet Stream episodes and reach out to new people to interview. No repeats of previous people that have been interviewed, new people only. Get out of our comfort zone and talk to strangers. Stop going to our friends for interviews.

In Class Thursday, September 5th - Broadcast Journalism Day 1.8:
  • Learn requirements for posting on Forum
  • View today's episode of the Jet Stream
  • Post on Forum 1.1, reflect on the Jet Stream
  • Go over Editing Checklist in our segment groups one final time if we have not finalized and turned in segment
  • Final Draft shown to teacher, Finalized Draft Checklist filled out
  • Students make final corrections & finalize segments​
  • Finalized segments placed on class hard drive
  • Complete the individual Jet Stream assessment if your segment has been finalized and turned in
  • Begin brainstorming segment ideas for our next round of episodes of the Jet Stream, consider the following categories and concepts:
    • ​News - elementary, middle, and high school, fact based, straightforward delivery
    • Features - reviews, fun, you can insert yourself, can contain your opinions
    • On-campus stories
    • Off-campus stories
    • Promotion
    • Advertisement
    • PSA
    • Shortie
  • Write down ideas for segments as we brainstorm

In Class Tuesday, September 3rd - Broadcast Journalism Day 1.7:
  • Review directions and mandatory requirements for editing
  • Segment teams show outlines to teacher, consult, and move in the right direction
  • Segment teams edit and use Editing Checklist as a guide
  • Segment teams design Teaser / PIP with embedded text of title, store in DM Jet Stream folder - due by the end of class
  • Host teams must fill in the remainder of scripts with time-sensitive news
  • Host teams vocal training
  • Host and Director team film Jet Stream hosting

In Class Friday, August 30th - Broadcast Journalism Day 1.6:
  • Learn the guidelines for editing (post-production) and the mandatory requirements for our Jet Stream segments on the class website
  • Vocal training video tutorial activity
  • Learn the strategies and guidelines for writing main host/narration/voiceover scripts for segments
  • Write segment host / voiceover / narration scripts
  • View our interviews and B-roll and begin to piece together our segments into stories with a beginning, middle, end, and closure
  • Finish writing the rest of our Broadcast Journalism Outlines
  • Brainstorm ideas for creative titles for our segments
  • Continue editing footage
  • Put away all equipment in proper location

  • Film any interviews you can't film during class time

In Class Wednesday, August 28th - Broadcast Journalism Day 1.5:
  • Discuss timeline and upcoming due dates.

  • Remind students to record names and titles of people we interview

In Class Monday, August 26th - Broadcast Journalism Day 1.4:
  • Discuss routines and locations: clipboards with camera operator, interviewer, and B-roll instructions along with our DM Broadcast Journalism Outlines must be carried on us at all times
  • Review storytelling in journalism: we must conduct research and interviews and then we start to piece together a story with closure. That comes with time, it isn't a complete story at this point in the process.
  • ​Review camera operator and interviewer requirements
  • Discuss filming interviews with phones and B-roll with phones or DSLR cameras, and rack focus.
  • Continue filming interviews

  • Sound check and practice framing interviews before we leave the room. Must take clipboards with our Outlines

    • Conduct research

  • Demo of student progress: student's high school stuco video, high school vlog, uni dance channel, discuss the progression, the number of followers and views, and how we can do that, too

  • Share Questionnaire responses with each other in small group discussion
